The heat of the sun blazed out

to irradiate the dark (v. 1b).

Light as a source of divine vision is assimilated with the impetus of the flight of the eagle to convey Maximin’s heavenly desires for the greater view: ‘he who longed for an eagle’s wings’ (v. 3b). The eagle is marked out by wings set alight at a height by the divine sun. Likewise the saint newly made luminous, ‘lucent Maximin’, arises with quickened human aspiration to pray for the community of seekers, for those ‘who strive toward the mirror/of light’ (v. 5).15 This turn of phrase intimates the medieval view of mirror (speculum) for the reflection of divine and human objects, and conjures up a feeling of comprehension which is utterly free of distortion. This is the sense in ‘Antiphon for St John the Evangelist’, where John is addressed as ‘mirror of the dove’. In the ‘Sequence for the Holy Spirit’, the Spirit is addressed as ‘limpid mirror of God’.16
